City of Sartell – Bow Hunting Community Survey

The City of Sartell is considering a proposed ordinance that would allow regulated bow hunting (only) within city limits under clearly defined safety and permitting requirements. The ordinance is intended to promote public safety, responsible wildlife management, and respect for surrounding neighborhoods, while remaining consistent with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources rules.

The City is exploring this option at the request of residents and to assist with responsible urban deer population control, helping to reduce incidents of vehicle collisions, property damage, and impacts to natural areas. Bow hunting is a quiet, low-risk activity when properly regulated and is commonly used and allowed by cities to manage wildlife on larger parcels, while allowing for an additional outdoor recreational opportunity in the community.

Some of the safety regulations being considered for the ordinance include the following:

Hunting is allowed only on qualifying private property
Minimum parcel size: 5 contiguous acres
No hunting on:
City-owned property (including parks and trails)
School district–owned property
Parcels with an active commercial business
Parcels zoned for high-density residential dwellings
Police Chief or designee has discretion to deny, condition, or revoke permits
Minimum safety buffer distances apply near homes, roads, and property lines
All state DNR hunting laws still apply
Hunters and landowners assume all liability

In consideration of allowing bow hunting within Sartell city limits (with restrictions laid out above), we are asking for feedback from citizens. Please answer the question below and provide additional commentary if you wish.
