Oyate Group's Brandon Hendricks Scholarship was created to honor an incredible young man who lost his life to senseless gun violence. Brandon was a shining star in the Bronx community and a natural-born leader. He was determined to use his education to transform his community for the better, and we know he would have. The Brandon Hendricks Scholarship was created to carry out his vision for a better Bronx by enabling young folks in the community to receive a college education.
Applications for the 6th annual Brandon Hendricks Scholarship are now open! Application closes March 31st 2025. Notifications of winners will be sent out May 1st.
The application includes: -written statements reflecting on Brandon’s life and detailing how applicants hope to use their education to improve the quality of life in the Bronx. -Your most up to date resume -1 Letter of recommendation
*There will also be an interview phase for the top 10 finalists, where only two will be selected.
Two college-bound Bronx high school seniors will win $20,000 each to use toward their education over a four-year period. In order to continue receiving $5,000 per school year completed, scholarship winners need to maintain a 3.0 GPA and be involved in one extracurricular activity at school (clubs, sports, etc.). After the first year, the two winners will become mentors to the next pair of winners for the following year and will continue until graduation.
Applicants must be from the Bronx and graduating high school seniors headed to college. This scholarship is open to students in the Bronx, regardless of immigration status.
About Brandon:
Brandon Hendricks Ellison was an amazing young man. His life was cut short by senseless gun violence on June 29 of 2020. He died one week before his 18th birthday and 2 days after graduating from Metropolitan Soundview HS in the James Monroe Educational Complex.
Brandon was an awesome son to his mother Eve Hendricks. He was a gifted basketball player. He was captain of the James Monroe Basketball team for his last two years of high school. He demonstrated excellent leadership skills. Brandon wore the number 5 jersey for James Monroe Basketball. The hashtag “live like 5” has come to exemplify the amazing qualities that Brandon exhibited while on this earth. He was a humble, and funny young man who was loved and respected by all. Brandon also excelled in the classroom. He was preparing to attend college to continue pursuing his dream of playing basketball professionally. He was planning to study Phys Ed, Physical Therapy or Sports Management. Brandon did everything right. He was a great son, an outstanding student and a fantastic basketball player. He was humble, supportive, respectful and ambitious. This scholarship has been established to continue Brandon’s legacy and to support deserving students in NYC who exemplifies the qualities that Brandon exhibited. We are excited to support you on your journey.
