Acquisition - Purchasing properties in high-risk areas and removing the structures to permanently reduce future disaster risk. Example: Buying a repeatedly flooded home, demolishing it, and maintaining the property as open space.
Elevation - Raising an existing structure above expected flood elevations to reduce the risk of flood damage. Example: Elevating a home on a raised foundation or pilings.
Planning - Identifying hazards, assessing community risks, and developing strategies and projects to reduce future disaster impacts. Example: Developing or updating a Local Mitigation Strategy or hazard mitigation plan.
Mitigation Reconstruction - Replacing an existing vulnerable structure with a new structure designed to better withstand hazards. Example: Demolishing a flood-prone home and rebuilding it at a safer elevation and to stronger standards.
Safe Room / Shelters - Constructing or improving spaces designed to protect people from severe weather and other hazards. Example: Building a tornado or hurricane safe room at a school, community center, or other facility.
Retrofits - Making improvements to existing buildings or infrastructure so they are more resistant to hazards. Examples: Strengthening roofs, installing hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows, floodproofing, or reinforcing structural components.
