Purpose and Value of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
HSPA utilizes Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to assist in the development and validation of its certification programs and exams. SMEs provide invaluable insight on the job and for the profession at-large and are able to thoroughly and accurately discuss duties and responsibilities of a job, knowledge requirements, skill requirements, ability requirements, and other pertinent information. With this expertise, SMEs are able to assist with various phases of the development and validation of HSPA's tests and assessments.

Beginning January, 2027, HSPA will be updating the CRCST, CIS, CER and CHL exams, as well as the CCSVP. Applications are currently being accepted for the following workshops:
- Item Writing: January 14-15, 2027
- Item Review: February 18-19, 2027
- Form Review: March 18-19, 2027
Applications for these workshops are due by September 4, 2026.
Please Note: you must be currently certified by HSPA to participate as a SME. These workshops are currently scheduled to be held in-person, in Chicago, IL. HSPA will provide travel and accommodations within the continental US and Canada.
