Oak Island Resilience Strategy Open House Survey

Resilience Strategy Purpose
This strategy is being conducted through the Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP). The RCCP provides financial and technical assistance to help coastal counties assess vulnerabilities, set resilience goals, evaluate their capacity, and develop prioritized, shovel-ready projects tailored to their specific risks.

Survey Purpose
The project team worked closely with the Community Action Team (CAT) to identify projects that will help Oak Island prepare for, withstand, and recover from coastal hazards. We invite community members to share their input on which projects should be prioritized and which can be implemented in the future.

Infrastructure Projects
1.Beach Nourishment
Project Description: Add sand to eroding beaches to create a buffer against waves and flooding while improving recreational value

Project Description: Build up existing dunes or create artificial dunes by mounding sediment at the back of the beach

Project Description: Naturally stabilize the coastal edge, control erosion, and protect land from waves and storms

4.Install Bulkheads
Project Description: Construct bulkheads in areas that require protection from erosion and wave action

Open Drainage Maintenance
Project Description: Improve stormwater facilities list ditches and storm drains
• Keep drainage ditches and storm drains free of debris
• Plant drainage ditches with native plants to improve water quality, minimize soil erosion, and support local wildlife while still managing excess runoff

6.Elevate Select Roads
Project Description: Raise the road profile above projected future flood levels on select primary roads that experience routine flooding

7.Permeable Surfacing Incentives
Project Description: Waive application fees for property owners who install permeable or green surface treatments in place of traditional hardscape

Project Description: Review current land use regulations, ordinances, and plans to re-evaluate current standards and policies relating to coastal development and flood-impacted neighborhoods

Project Description: Improve evacuation route signage and public emergency communication
