Thank you for your interest in the Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network’s Afterschool Community Champions Program. Champions are a select group of leaders in Georgia who commit to a year of civic engagement to strengthen community awareness, support effective programs, and bring diverse partners to the table. Now more than ever, we need advocates to support programs that are serving the needs of youth, families, and their community.

A successful Champion should be interested in increasing access to high-quality afterschool, summer, and expanded learning programs. Champions are expected to fully participate in the program, including engaging in the following activities:
  • Attend the mandatory two-day kick-off advocacy training on August 29 - 30, 2024 in Atlanta.
  • Spend 2-3 hours per month on Champion-related activities committed to advocating for out-of-school time programs and the young people they serve.
  • Attend, participate, and perform assigned duties as an ambassador in Afterschool Day at the Capitol (tentative for February 12, 2025).
  • Participate in virtual monthly calls on the following dates. Failure to attend more than two calls may result in dismissal from the program. Calls are from 10 – 11:30 am:
    • October 10, 2024
    • November 7, 2024
    • December 5, 2024
    • January 9, 2025
    • February 20, 2025
    • March 13, 2025
    • April 10, 2025
    • May 8, 2025
  • Submit a final report on the progress of the advocacy goal and give a presentation on the final monthly call (May 8, 2025).

Champions will have the chance to connect with various leaders and stakeholders who care deeply about the lives of children in our state. Throughout the year, there will be opportunities to develop an advocacy action plan, followed by the implementation of advocacy events with the support of a stipend. Champions also receive complimentary registration to the 2026 Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Conference.

The deadline to apply is Friday, July 26, 2024. Applicants can expect to receive notification about their status by early August 2024.
