2026 Make Your Mark! Conference Awards

Mia Peterson Award Graphic
Mia Peterson dedicated her life to advocating for individuals with disabilities.

By speaking up for herself and her peers, meeting with legislators, and starting conversations about the disability community, she truly made a difference for Iowans across the state. She was not afraid to share her experience with Down syndrome, and openly discussed the things that made her unique.

All of this allowed her to reach audiences near and far, while making people aware of the importance of people-first, plain language that lets individuals with disabilities be fully included in the conversation. Mia was also very outspoken about helping people live independently, showing her true passion for creating inclusive communities throughout Iowa.

The purpose of the Mia Peterson Self-Advocacy Award is to recognize an Iowan with a disability who embodies Mia’s legacy and works to advocate for the rights of all people with disabilities. This award will be given out at the annual Make Your Mark! Conference to someone who is dedicated to creating positive change in Iowa.

This year's conference will be held on September 16-17, 2026.

Applications are due by July 31, 2026.

Rik Shannon dedicated his professional life to improving the lives of Iowans with disabilities during his 23 years as the Public Policy Manager at the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council.

Rik was known for his clever sense of humor, his ability to make advocacy fun, and his dedication to advocating for equal opportunities for people with disabilities. He was instrumental in establishing our annual Make Your Mark! Self-Advocacy Conference, which is now in its 13th year thanks to Rik’s vision.

After starting his retirement adventure, Rik enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and of course cycling. Rik unfortunately passed away in 2025. The Iowa DD Council wants to honor Rik’s legacy by recognizing disability champions who have devoted their careers to creating a more inclusive environment for people with disabilities by raising awareness, implementing positive changes, and advocating for equal opportunities.
