General Information

If you are a faculty member, staff, or researcher at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), you are invited to apply to be an instructor! The deadline to apply is June 1, 2024.

Overview of Program

The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Data Science Initiative proudly serves Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to advance data science.

The AUC PreFreshman Experience (PFx) virtual summer program offers incoming HBCU students a chance to engage in data science before the start of their first year. Throughout the one-week program, students will explore applications of data science and learn about different career opportunities. The program will provide an immersive experience in a data science project with a college professor (instructor) and research mentors. Students will engage in excellent networking opportunities with data science professionals as well as with students from across HBCUs. Instructors will receive a $2,000 stipend.

Responsibilities
Develop a one-week data science project appropriate for a team of 6 incoming HBCU students from various backgrounds with no prerequisite requirements. The instructor will be responsible for designing the project, providing guidance to the research mentor, and leading the participants through a data science project. The teams will be supported by a research mentor who is a rising junior, senior, or graduate student currently enrolled at an HBCU institution. Most of the team members will be recent high school graduates and may not have experience in data science, statistics, or programming.

Before the program begins, the instructor should have a complete data science project prepared.

Expectations
  • Identify a data set that speaks to “Data for Social Impact” that solves a societal challenge through data insights and innovation.
  • Hypothesize as to how students will analyze the dataset with technology (e.g., Excel, Python, R, Tableau)
  • Define the learning outcomes of the data analysis with technology.
  • Meet with research mentor before the start of the program to convey what the participants will be expected to do with the dataset
  • Guide the research mentor during the program and receive a daily report from the research mentor on the progress of the project
  • Incorporate relevant active engagement activities that explore data science concepts and tools.
