Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a tutor-mentor with Wright to Read. Please complete the following form to help us determine if you would be a good fit for our program.
Please read our general program description below and initial underneath to confirm you have read and understand the description.
Wright to Read is a literacy tutoring-mentoring program that works to match volunteer tutor-mentors with Alexandria City Public School students who need extra support in their literacy skills. Our goal is not only to help give this child support along their reading journey (including access to books, resources, and a larger reading community), but also a mentor through elementary school and beyond. In addition to tutoring, Wright to Read also offers enrichment activities year-round to help strengthen relationships between students, volunteers, and families across the program.

Who we serve:
A diverse population of students in the City of Alexandria. New students typically beginning in elementary school but mentoring relationships have extended into middle/high school and beyond. We partner with Alexandria City Public Schools who refer students who need additional support in reading.

Where and when:
  • This spring, Wright to Read is launching a pilot program to recruit volunteers to provide tutoring services at ACPS after-school sites. For one hour a week, you will work with an elementary-aged student during an after-school program to help improve their literacy skills, inspire a love of reading and help develop other important attributes that are key in their future success!
  • Tutoring will occur at a school site from either 3:00-4:00 pm or 4:00-5:00 pm once a week on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (your placement will depend on your availability on those days). Volunteers should arrive at least 15 minutes before their tutoring start time to check in at the school’s front office and then settle in before their work begins.
If you are unable to meet with students during these times on the weekdays but are still interested in serving as a tutor-mentor for Wright to Read, our program also allows volunteers to meet with their students on weekdays/weekends at the public library.  Please review the description here and complete the separate form here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/22vol-int

Requirements:
Volunteers are required to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 (your vax card will be requested for verification). Please note our students are not required to be vaccinated at this time
While we ask that our volunteers work with our students for at least a year once assigned/matched (although many relationships last longer). If you think your circumstances (e.g., living in the Alexandria area, work or family responsibilities may prohibit you from continuing beyond this spring, etc.) may change in the next 1-2 years, contact us about other opportunities or programs that may be a better fit.

Next steps:
  1. Please complete the questions below to confirm your interest and eligibility
  2. Take part in an interview with Wright to Read program staff
  3. Complete a background check (typically a 4-6 week process)
  4. Attend online volunteer onboarding training
  5. Match to be made in February or March (depending on timing of completed background check)
