Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a tutor-mentor with Wright to Read. Please complete the following form to help us determine if you would be a good fit for our program.
Please read our general program description below and initial underneath to confirm you have read and understand the description.
Who we serve:
A diverse population of students in the City of Alexandria. New students typically beginning in elementary school but mentoring relationships have extended into middle* and high school. We partner with Alexandria City Public Schools who refer students who need additional support in reading.

Commitment:
1-year (12-month) commitment to work with your matched student after you begin meeting with them.  However, the strength of our program lies in the sustained relationship developed over multiple years (our mentorships last on average ~3 years). Volunteers should strive to meet at least for one hour a week at a consistent day and time with their student.

Where and when:
As 2022, we are transitioning from virtual tutoring back to in-person tutoring at a local public library or public space. Volunteers must be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 to meet with a student in-person. We continue to encourage virtual tutoring via Zoom in situations where either party is experiencing sickness/symptoms, needs to be quarantined, or may be traveling. We will continue to adapt to changing needs of our families and volunteers through the ongoing pandemic.

In 2023, we are testing a new pilot where a tutor-mentor will meet with their student during an after-school program at an ACPS school site (typically in the 3-5 pm timeframe). If you are interested in that specific model, please fill out the form found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2023-sitetm

What we provide:
  • Volunteer training (occurs via online Zoom meetings)
  • Books, supplies, and resources to use with their student
  • Access to reading specialists and educators to assess students and advise volunteers
  • Periodic virtual and in-person enrichment events planned by Wright to Read to engage tutor-mentors, students and their families
  • Sharing of tips through coffee chats, e-newsletters, and social media

Next steps:
  1. Please complete the questions below to confirm your interest and eligibility
  2. Take part in an interview with Wright to Read program staff
  3. Complete a background check (typically a 4-8 week process)
  4. Attend online volunteer onboarding training (~6 hours of live training and viewing of pre-recorded sessions will be expected prior to being matched)
  5. Match to be made in Fall 2022 or Early Spring 2023 (depending on timing of completed background check)

Question Title

* 12. Wright to Read launched a new mentoring program focused on students in middle school that will lead students through a project-based learning experience, focusing on key literacy skills such as researching, writing and presenting. The time commitment for this 10-month program is at least two 3-hour meetings a month and occasional attendance at field trips/enrichment events that may take place on a weekend. The mentoring model will also be group-based, in which volunteers will be matched with at least TWO students and work with other mentors within a team to guide students through the activities and events of the project.

While we are not adding new mentors to the pilot as of 10/17/22, please let us know if this program/model is something you may be interested in being part of in the future below, or if you have a specific interesting in working with students in middle school:
