Is Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) right for me?

If you are thinking about pursuing PLA, answer the following questions to determine whether PLA might be an option for you. Please keep in mind that you will need to contact an academic or admissions advisor in order to formally determine whether you have space within your degree plan for PLA.

* 1. Do I have any transcripts, diplomas, certificates, or licenses that I have earned at non-accredited educational institutions, organizations, or the Armed Forces?

Lewis University awards credit for military training and other non-college sponsored learning activities according to current recommendations of the American Council of Education (ACE).

* 2. Do I need to take any history, writing, political science, or math courses? All students are required to take courses in various subjects, called General Education requirements. If you still need to take some, would you be interested in taking a standardized exam to fulfill a requirement?

* 3. Do I need to fulfill requirements in my major?

Depending upon your past professional experiences and your major, you may be able to take a Challenge Exam or write a Prior Learning Portfolio to demonstrate college level learning for a course in your major, for up to 9 credits within your major.

* 4. Do I need to earn general elective credits?

General elective credits are those that are not within your major or general education requirements, and may be earned in a variety of ways. Students with Associates Degrees and a large number of transfer credits may not need elective credits. If you do need elective credits, you may be able to write a Prior Learning Portfolio for University Studies Credit to earn credit towards your degree.
