NAME OF RESEARCHER: Peter Adcock

PROJECT SUPERVISOR: Dr. Sandy Wolfson

PROJECT TITLE: The Personal Perceptions of Football Fans and how they compare their club to others

1. What is the purpose of the project?
This project is aiming to investigate the detailed perceptions of football fans and their opinions of their clubs. This is with specific reference to a selected group of clubs who were seen as ideal candidates for this study.

2. Why have I been selected to take part and what are the exclusion criteria (i.e. is there any reason why I shouldn’t take part)?
The sample groups will be taken from supporters of particular football clubs. There will be no specific criteria for inclusion apart from the confirmation of the participant that they are a ‘strong’ supporter of their chosen football club.

It should be noted that not all of the participants will be known to the researcher. The researcher will recruit people who are fans of the chosen clubs and also ask them to identify other fans who might be interested in completing the questionnaire.

3. What will I have to do?
This research involves the completion of a questionnaire that contains items referring directly to the topic. These will need to be completed and sent back to the researcher. Below is an example item from the questionnaire:
- On the scale below, rate how highly important you perceive a successful history to be to a football club.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

4. Will my participation involve any physical discomfort?
Apart from the typed or handwritten completion of the questionnaire, no other actions are needed on your part.

5. Will my participation involve any psychological discomfort or embarrassment?
While this is not viewed as a particular issue, it should be pointed out that the questionnaire contains items referring directly to the underperforming and current underachievement of your club.

6. Will I have to provide any bodily samples (i.e. blood, saliva)?
No

7. How will confidentiality be assured?
Each participant will be assigned a number, which is the only thing that will be used to refer to that individual throughout the rest of the study. Any information from the investigation will be kept in a secure, locked storage compartment. If the information is electronic then it will be stored on a password protected computer. Every piece of information that is held on the participants will be treated in full compliance with the Data Protection Act.
