Welcome to the registration site for the 2013-2014 school year statewide training series!

Please complete this online registration to attend the Strengthening your core language: Building vocabulary independence workshop presented by Elisa Robinson & Daniel Dardiz. Be careful with capitalization and spelling as this is the database for your nametag and other pertinent documents. This workshop is a full-day event (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM) On-site sign in will begin at 8:30 AM on the day of the workshop.

Saltillo & PRC will offer CEUs at no cost for the following professionals:
.5 CEUs (5 contact hours) – ASHA has approved Saltillo & PRC to offer continuing education activities and is a co-sponsor of this event.

Individuals seeking CEUs will be required to complete a pretest and posttest online, award of CEUs will require a minimum score of 80% on the posttest and CEU certificates will be issued by ASHA.

Elisa Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of South Florida. Elisa worked as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant for two Pasco County Schools, working with students from 2 to 21 years of age with a wide range of communication disabilities. Most recently, Elisa worked as an Assistive Technology Program Specialist for Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology. Elisa truly enjoys helping those with disabilities become more independent in their daily lives.

Daniel Dardiz, M.A., CCC-SLP received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Central Florida in 1999. His initial clinical/educational experiences included providing services as an itinerant Speech-Language Pathologist serving children with a wide variety of neurological and cognitive disorders within center-based schools. He also served as a bilingual diagnostician and Local Assistive Technology evaluator. Daniel assisted in trainings and developing strategies for effective use of AAC in the classroom as well as addressing needs of second language learners diagnosed with speech-language disorders.

This workshop will provide an overview of core vocabulary. Core vocabulary is what we use for communication every day. About 80% of the words we use will be core. Participants will develop understanding of what core vocabulary is and how it can be represented in a variety of ways. We will discuss the importance of core vocabulary and the link between language and literacy development. Participants will explore use of core vocabulary in social and academic environments. Finally, we will discuss integration of core vocabulary with technology.

Participants will be able to:
• Identify major classes of core vocabulary
• State the importance of using core vocabulary
• Demonstrate use of core vocabulary in at least 3 different activities
• Explain how to foster language growth through basic core vocabulary
