1. Introductory Information

Dear Centropa Seminar Applicant,

We're pleased to announce Centropa's forthcoming winter seminar, which will be held in one of the coolest places we've yet found: the BMW Conference Center in Greer, SC, in the Greenville/Spartanburg area. For two days you will be immersed in 20th century European Jewish history, digital storytelling, and conversations about how to make your classroom a global classroom--all in a high tech environment with elegant break-out rooms, yet just a few minutes away from the center of Greenville, one of the prettiest downtowns in America.

We are not just going to study Centropa films: we're going to talk about making films with our students--like on Max Heller, who fled Vienna as a boy, made his way from janitor to successful businessman in Greenville, and then became the mayor who desegregated city offices. A real hero, just as was Kurt Landauer, the Jewish businessman in Munich who as president of Bayern Muenchen took his football (soccer) team to the championship--in 1932. A year later, Kurt ran for his life. In 1945, Kurt returned to Munich and took back his football team, thank you very much.

We begin at 11 am on Sunday, February 16, and end at 3:00 pm on Monday, February 17.

While we would like to cover everyone's expenses, we can't. If you can put some skin in the game by covering your expenses, we'd like to hear from you. We have just a few grants to cover some costs. For public school educators we can cover one night in a hotel, your air or train fare (or gas if you drive in), breakfast on Monday, two lunches and snacks - you'll need to cover all other expenses. We have fewer grants for Jewish school teachers so we ask you to cover your transportation, although we'll cover for your hotel for one night, breakfast on Monday, both lunches and snacks. Let us know about kosher food needs.

Once accepted, we'll ask you to make your travel arrangements immediately and if we are covering your travel costs as described above be sure to save all receipts and boarding passes so we can reimburse you.

Thank you for your interest in Centropa. Please do not hesitate to contact Lauren Granite (granite@centropa.org, 301-787-0052) with any questions.

We look forward to reading your application.

Best,

Edward Serotta, Director
Lauren Granite, US Education Director
