DESCRIPTION

This project is being undertaken as part of a PhD study for Cody Phillips. The purpose of this project is to explore the effect of videogame rewards on the player experience. You are invited to participate in this project because you have a general interest in videogames.

While it is not contentious to claim that videogame rewards play an important role in the enjoyment of videogames, the impact of videogame rewards on players and the player experience are poorly understood. This research has implications for the design and use of videogames, especially in promoting positive player outcomes.

PARTICIPATION

Participation will involve completing a short series of anonymous questionnaires in relation to a short videogame that you will play for 5 minutes. It is expected that the study will take approximately 20 minutes of your time. Questions will include rating your mood, reward sensitivity, interest and enjoyment of the game, demographic questions such as your age and gender, as well as questions relating to your prior experience playing videogames.

Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you agree to participate you do not have to complete any question(s) you are uncomfortable answering. Your decision to participate or not participate will in no way impact upon your current or future relationship with QUT (for example your grades). If you do agree to participate you can withdraw from the project without comment or penalty. However as the questionnaire is anonymous once it has been submitted it will not be possible to withdraw.

EXPECTED BENEFITS

Upon completion of the survey you will have the opportunity to enter into a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card by providing your email address. Your email address will only be used for this purpose, will be kept separate from your responses and will be destroyed at the end of the project.

RISKS

There are no risks beyond normal day-to- day living associated with your participation in this project.

PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY

All comments and responses are anonymous and will be treated confidentially unless required by law. The names of individual persons are not required in any of the responses. Any data collected as part of this project will be stored securely as per QUT’s Management of research data policy. Please note that non-identifiable data collected in this project may be used as comparative data in future projects or stored on an open access database for secondary analysis. The project is partially funded by the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre, and they will not have access to the data obtained during the project.

CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE

Submitting the completed online questionnaire is accepted as an indication of your consent to participate in this project.
