Spring 2022 SSM Application

Thank you for your interest in submitting an application to become a Student Success Mentor (SSM) at LaGuardia Community College. To make sure you have a good understanding of the SSM position, we’ve designed a three-part application process. In the first part, you will learn about the First Year Seminar course through a short video and what it offers LaGuardia students. In the second part, you will learn about the SSM program and what SSMs do. Finally, in the last part, you will submit your information including your resume and cover letter expressing your interest and qualifications for the position. If you are selected for an interview, you will be notified via email.
Please be advised: The SSM role is an in-person position. 

Before beginning this application, please take note of the following required components:

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must:  
  • Be a current LaGuardia Community College student with a minimum of 24 completed credits and two semesters with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • UPDATE: Or a Spring 2021 graduate of LaGuardia, currently enrolled at a four-year college with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 graduates are now being considered for the position.
  • Be proficient in English; proficiency in other languages is a plus
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Possess a strong commitment to integrity in the workplace
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess strong leadership skills as well as the ability to both collaborate and work as part of a team, as well as independently
  • Possess a solid understanding of the LaGuardia student experience, along with an enthusiasm for supporting student success

Work Modality
Please note: The required training for SSMs, as well work in Spring 2022, will take place on-campus, in-person. To this end, as LaGaurdia students working on campus, newly hired SSMs are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

In order to be employed as Student Success Mentor at LaGuardia, all prospective mentors need to be authorized to work legally in the United States--or have obtained work authorization by February 15th, 2022.  To this end, applicants must be U.S Citizens, permanent residents, or International Students possessing an F-1 student visa. While you will not be asked to submit this now, if you are offered the position, you will be asked to provide documentation showing your eligibility to work lawfully in the United States.

Written Prompts
