Guidelines

The Queensland National Science Week Coordinating Committee is offering grants up to $5,000 for activities delivered during or close to National Science Week: 14–22 August 2021.

The purpose of the grants is to increase community engagement with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) based activities during National Science Week in Queensland. These can be online, in-person or hybrid events. All in-person event proposals will need to be include reference to COVID-19 considerations and contingency plans.

We are especially interested in initiatives that build science capability, engagement, and networks in the regions. Where possible, we encourage applicants to collaborate with existing local organisations, including STEM Hubs.

Grant criteria
Applications will be assessed on how well activities are designed to achieve the objectives of National Science Week, and how well the objectives and key criteria below are addressed.

1. Events must meet at least two of the following objectives:
  • Inspire young people to pursue an interest or aptitude in science
  • Extend networks and partnership opportunities
  • Encourage community participation and feedback
  • Encourage diversity and inclusion in programming
  • Share Australian science achievements and knowledge
2. Applications are required to include information on each of the key criteria listed below:
  • Locations - Virtual, or physically located STEM activities. Preference is given to events in locations where STEM events aren’t normally on offer or easily accessible.
  • Target audiences* - initiatives designed to engage a wide and diverse audience, particularly those with less exposure to STEM; or events aimed at the wider community, rather than a single organisation.
  • Planning - how you will achieve your objectives.
  • Engaging audiences - how you will reach your target audience and promote the event or activity.
  • Potential impact and value for money - preference will be given to initiatives that show consideration for potential longer-term tangible benefits. For example, pilot events which can be run again used as a stepping-stone for future events, or links with business or community initiatives.
*events held solely for individual school communities are not eligible – instead see the National Science Week school grants, closing 2 April.
