The purpose of the Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships are to provide financial assistance to exceptional applicants of Māori descent who are undertaking vocational or tertiary study and who demonstrate values consistent with members of the 28th (Māori) Battalion.

The 28th (Māori) Battalion were renowned for their skills and bravery in the Second World War. One of their battles was for the right to be considered equal in their own country. This is known as the ‘Price of Citizenship’ (see: Soutar, M., 2008, Ngā Tama Toa: The Price of Citizenship). A powerful reminder that their sacrifice was tied not only to war, but to the right to be seen, valued, and accepted as individuals.
