Thank you for your interest in this research project. Your time and help are important to us. Please read the following carefully. If anything is unclear or you want more details, please contact us using the information at the end of this page.

We have a new farmer crisis in Canada. More farmers are retiring each year than there are new farmers and most farm policies and programs don’t adequately address the specific needs of new farmers.

While this survey is about new farmers, we encourage everyone who identifies as a new, aspiring, exited, or experienced farmers (since you were once a new farmer too!) to participate. We include all ages and backgrounds, including first generation farmers and farmers who were raised on family farms.

What information will be collected?
The survey questions are about you farm, obstacles you have faced, and things that you would like to see changed. This survey is designed for individual feedback, so we encourage all members of a farm to participate. We have provided space for comments on most questions and we'd love to hear details from your responses when possible.

What is being requested of me?
Filling in the online survey should take approximately 30-45 minutes.

What are my rights as a participant?
Participation is entirely voluntary and you are welcome to refuse to participate, withdraw at any time while completing the survey, and/or refuse to answer any specific questions without negative consequences.

Are there any benefits or risks I should be aware of?
This research may have indirect benefits by informing policy development in food and agriculture. It may also support organizations to better structure their programs to support new farmers.

Please note that the online survey tool used in the study, Survey Monkey, is hosted by a server located in the USA. The US Patriot Act permits U.S. law enforcement officials, for the purpose of anti-terrorism investigation, to seek a court order that allows access to the personal records of any person without the person’s knowledge. In view of this we cannot absolutely guarantee the full confidentiality and anonymity of your data. With your consent to participate in this study, you acknowledge this.

How will my confidentiality be maintained?
The data collected in this survey will be aggregated and any identifiers eliminated, thus protecting anonymity.

How will my data be stored?
Data will be stored in a password protected electronic format and in a locked cabinet in the Braun Building at Lakehead University.

How can I receive a copy of the research results?
The final research results will be shared on our website: www.ruminationsongerminations.ca  Summaries can also be requested by participants at any time by contacting the researchers directly.
