The New Zealand Carers Alliance of 48 not-for-profit organisations ( is working with the government to update the New Zealand Carers' Strategy Action Plan.  This action plan helps the government decide where to spend money to support carers.

During this work incontinence has been highlighted as a significant and somewhat hidden issue for people and their families. Living with incontinence also costs money and disposing of the products used is likely to be having a significant environmental impact.

The Carers Alliance has asked Synergia ( to do research into incontinence.  A part of this is asking people about their experiences managing bowel and bladder incontinence at home.

This short survey asks you some questions about incontinence. Your responses are confidential and anonymous.

The information you provide will help the Carers Alliance, families, government, and wider society to understanding incontinence issues and possible ways to assist New Zealanders who experience incontinence.

The survey should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Shona Hutchinson on

Only complete this survey if you, or someone you know (of any age), experiences bowel and/or bladder incontinence.
