Dear Fitness Professional:
The Safety and Health Assessment and Research for Prevention (SHARP) program at Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and Emily Stewart Fitness invite you to participate in an online survey. You've received this invitation because you are working as a fitness professional in any capacity-- instructor, coach, group fitness coordinator, teacher, trainer, etcetera. Even if you just teach one fitness class a week, your work experience as a fitness professional is important to us.
We want to learn more about your work demands, your work arrangements with studios / gyms, and the health and safety at the places you work. We recognize that answering questions about your work may cause stress in some cases. With your help, we can learn a lot from people who work in this industry. We will use your responses to make recommendations to keep fitness instructors safe and healthy-- potentially informing policy, directing future research studies, and improving safety training.
The survey will take about 30 - 60 minutes. It can be completed in multiple sittings. You can exit the survey at any time and then return to it later. It is voluntary and your participation is completely anonymous. You may skip any question that you do not feel comfortable answering. All individual responses will be kept confidential. Only aggregate response totals will be published.
We will use the aggregate results of this survey to make recommendations to public and private entities on creating a more equitable, sustainable, and fair fitness industry. Therefore, it is important that we hear from as many of you as possible. Then, our recommendations will apply to fitness instructors across as many modalities and work arrangements as possible. So please share this survey with other fitness instructors.
If you wish, we can send you a summary of the survey results once the study is complete. Simply email firstname.lastname@example.org to request a copy of the data. You can also use that email address to ask questions and voice concerns.
A background on the survey creators:
Emily Stewart is a full-time fitness instructor. After attempting to unionize fitness in 2020, she formed an organization called Group Fitness Instructors United to advocate for instructors' rights. She is dedicated to researching the economic, cultural, and social phenomenon of the global group fitness industry. She plans to inform regulators and leaders on ensuring that its participants are able to thrive. This includes the students' experience as an issue of public health prevention and promotion as well as the instructors' experience as an issue of fair and appropriate employment, taxation, and consumer awareness. Her websites are www.emilystewartfitness.com and www.gfi-united.org.
SHARP is a research program at the Department of Labor and Industries whose primary focus is the prevention of work-related injury and illness. SHARP is NOT involved in workers' compensation claim adjudication or administration. Participation in this survey will NOT affect any of your current or future workers' compensation claims or your individual fitness businesses.
