Title: Your Voice Matters: Simple Steps to Keep Your Voice Healthy During the School Day
Date: November 28, 2018
Time: 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Catherine A. Dwyer Elementary School- Library - 665 Mt. Hope Avenue Wharton, NJ 07885
Instructor: Casey Goryeb

As a vocal music teacher, I have been trained in a variety of exercises and practices in the realm of vocal health. While teaching at the elementary level, I noticed how some teachers would periodically sound like they had some sort of illness even if they did not. Many of these teachers attributed this to over-use of their voice and needing to speak loudly to be heard while giving direction to students.

As a full-time elementary general music teacher and part time performer in a gigging band, I noticed that if I did not do some of these warm ups in the morning and take periodic “vocal naps” I would ultimately lose my voice or begin to feel mild to moderate discomfort in my throat. I began to wonder if some of the warm-ups that I do could help teachers with their vocal fatigue and possibly teach them how to use their voice in ways that help them project without straining their voice. I studied this idea with a group of elementary teachers in my school for my Master's Thesis and thought others would benefit from the information. This course will provide simple exercises for breathing, phonation, and relaxation of the vocal folds.

We will view a Google Slides presentation of the information and video of a laryngoscopy and talk about the anatomy of the voice.
The intended audience is for general education teachers of any grade level.
