CTY's Commitment to Diversity

Diversity is defined broadly to include age, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, language, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. In addition we are committed to helping create an environment that is welcoming and respectful of staff and students from all backgrounds. We view the goal of increasing diversity as directly related to creating the best quality academic programs for our students. Our program is dedicated to the world of ideas and that world expands exponentially as those with different experiences and points of view share their knowledge and interpretations with one another. Diversity increases the breadth and depth of a person's education and is crucial to a full understanding of the world around us. A commitment to diversity is recognition of the past and a promise of the future-something owed to students of all backgrounds.

The four areas of focus in the growth and development of a diverse CTY community are:
  1. Recruitment of a diverse candidate pool.
  2. Hiring of a diverse staff.
  3. Creation of a safe and supportive community for our staff and students through education, training, and communication.
  4. Retention of a diverse staff.
CTY Summer Programs Overview
  • We have two three-week summer sessions. In each, students spend 5-7 hours a day in one advanced level course.
  • The day also includes more traditional camp style activities like sports and arts and crafts.
  • Classes are fast-paced and high level; students regularly learn a semester’s worth of material in the 3-week session.
  • Classes are in science, math, computer science, writing, and humanities (political science, psychology, history, geography, etc.)
What is the learning environment like?
  • Teacher curated but student led learning experience; lecture is limited and active learning is emphasized.
  • For many students, first experience being challenged academically – goal to push kids to achieve in a safe space.
  • Teachers often say how exciting it is to teach for learning’s sake and not to a test and to teach kids that are excited to learn (Self-selected group of kids for each content area).
  • Socially inclusive – Not just intellectual but emotional growth of students is emphasized. For instance we have a residence life curriculum that supports students outside of the classroom.
  • CTY Summer Programs staffing is like school structure. Deans that have oversight, counselor, health office, etc. Each class has an assistant to help support the teacher and students in one particular class.
  • Teachers have a lot of curricular autonomy. We provide curricular resources but don’t have a prescribed curriculum for courses.
