After a cold winter, Mississauga needs a 20-Minute Makeover! Join the thousands across Ontario who will volunteer for 20 minutes to pick up litter around their workplace, school or community.

Please ensure that you bring your garbage and recycling back to the exact location for pickup as indicated in your registration.

Please read the safety tips below and be sure to pick up hard copies for your group at your local community centre. To download the tip sheet, click here.

DO’s
Individuals:
Bring and wear gloves, thick-soled closed shoes, long pants and long-sleeved shirts
Wear safety vests or bright colours
Wear sunscreen and/or bug repellent
Drink plenty of fluids and keep quick energy foods on hand
Be aware of your surroundings and the potential hazards associated with them (e.g., passing cars, hazardous tree branches, poison ivy, broken glass, needles, etc.)
Use the “buddy system.” Work in teams of two or three to maximize safety
Keep pre-moistened towelettes or hand-sanitizer on hand and wash hands after the cleanup

Group Leader:
Please ensure that all participants in your group have read this information sheet.
Be aware of all known allergies of volunteers before participation
Know emergency procedures, such as the location of the nearest emergency facility and how to quickly summon the police or an ambulance
Have a first aid kit and cellular phone on hand
If possible, have someone trained in CPR and/or First-aid on hand
Provide adequate adult supervision if you involve youth in litter removal
For all participants under the age of 18 years old, ensure that they are accompanied by an adult
If you discover a questionable object on City of Mississauga property, please call 3-1-1 to report your concern 

DON’Ts
Individuals:
Don’t pick up hazardous materials such as hypodermic needles, sharp objects, old car batteries, condoms, animal carcasses or other unidentified, questionable objects 
Don’t overstuff bags
Don’t attempt to move large objects such as rusted car shells, old household appliances or swing sets
Don’t bring pets to events, as they may distract participants or even detract from the cleanup
Don’t enter swift moving water
Don’t overdo it physically
Don’t bring alcoholic beverages or consume alcohol during a clean-up

Group Leader:
Don’t schedule cleanups during peak pedestrian or traffic hours
Don’t conduct cleanups during extremely inclement weather
Don’t conduct cleanups near or around construction sites or heavy traffic areas

Please be advised that each participant is participating at his/her own risk. The City of Mississauga is not responsible for any damage or injury sustained as a result of or during participation in this event. Participants shall have read and agree to comply with the recommended safety tips. Participants understand that it is entirely within their right and responsibility to decrease or stop their participation should they at any time believe it to be unsafe to continue doing so. Participants acknowledge they are free to voluntarily withdraw from the event at any time. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by adult supervision.
