* The 36-team men’s professional league that the Defiance play in, the United Soccer League (USL), has seen total attendance increase 33 percent since 2013. The Sounders FC, the parent club of the Tacoma Defiance, has a charitable arm called the Rave Foundation that invests in community sports. Cheney Stadium covers the infield diamond with new turf for Tacoma Defiance and Reign FC matches, so the teams need a permanent home in order to stay in Tacoma. High schools and youth recreation programs could use the stadium often.

Do you support a public-private partnership to build a soccer stadium near Cheney Stadium?

* There are not enough sports fields to accommodate the current level of public demand, and that gets even more difficult as Tacoma’s population quickly grows. More all-weather turf fields provide much more programming time year-round.

Do you support building a group of sports fields?

* Cheney Stadium renovations were also funded through public-private partnerships. The stadium, retail/residential development, and sports fields would generate hundreds of new jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenues from all the events and activity.
