JOB DESCRIPTION

The Head Route Setter is responsible for setting high-quality and challenging routes that cater to climbers of all skill levels. This position requires a deep understanding of climbing movements, route grading, injury prevention, and training techniques. The Head Route Setter will be a vital leader and mentor to the route setting team and Hive staff members.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to)
  • Set high-quality routes for all climbing areas in the gym.
  • Ensure that routes are graded accurately and challenging enough to meet the needs of the gym’s members, Youth Recreational Programs, and the Competitive Climbing Team.
  • Conduct regular assessments to track teams’ progress and adjust training plans accordingly.
  • Collaborate with the gym management team to maintain the climbing and training area’s aesthetics, including the selection of holds, equipment, and volumes.
  • Regularly assess and maintain climbing and training equipment, including ropes, anchors, weights, resistance bands, and hangboards
  • Ensure that all routes and equipment meet safety standards
  • Provide leadership, mentorship to the route setting crew in order to help build the technical route setting knowledge of the setting team at the assigned facility(ies). This includes onboarding and training of new route setters.
  • Constantly ensure the health & safety of the crew by enforcing adherence to WorkSafeBC rules including proper use of ear/eye protection, ladder and all facets of risk-mitigating bouldering.
  • Assist with competitions and events are required
  • Help execute competitions hosted by the Hive including sanctioned events with the SCBC, CEC, Tour De Blocs, Arc’teryx Academy and in-house events.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all gym members

REQUIREMENTS
  • No degree, certificate or diploma
  • Minimum climbing level of V6+
  • 3-5 years of climbing experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in route setting
  • 1+ years of climbing gym work experience
  • Current first aid and CPR certification
  • Comfortable working at heights for short and long periods of time
  • Brilliant coordination, mentorship, and informed risk-based decision making
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
