The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, We Are Healers, and We R Native and are committed to supporting American Indian & Alaska Native youth (14-24 years old) interested in pursuing healthcare professions.

Instructions: Please fill out the Youth Stipend Application below. Priority will be given to youth who already have an internship site, but applications will also be accepted from youth or sites needing help seeking a match.

Due: Applications will be filled on a rolling basis.

Stipend: Selected youth will receive $600 to cover their internship time and/or travel.

Scope of Work: Host sites will provide student interns with hands-on training in health careers, health promotion strategies, research and evaluation methods, or community-based participatory research.

Number of Awards Available: 10-12 awards will be funded per Year

Eligible Participants 
  • American Indian or Alaska Native youth (14 to 24 years-old)
  • Interest in a health or wellness career

Eligible Internship Sites
  • Tribal health and wellness programs
  • IHS, Tribal or Urban Indian Clinics (I/T/U)
  • Indian Health Boards and Tribal Epidemiology Centers 
  • Other clinics serving AI/ANs

Learning Objectives: Participants will:
  • learn about tribal health professions and career paths
  • establish mentorships with a health professional
  • learn about community-based participatory research strategies
  • have participated in a resume-building job shadow, internship or work experience

Evaluation: Upon completion of the internship, a 3-minute feedback form will be requested from participants, documenting internship activities and outcomes.

Payment Process: Unless otherwise requested, checks will be made out to the youth (requiring a social security number), but will be mailed to the host site for payment after the internship.

Can sites host more than one intern? Yes. Sites can host up to 4 student interns.
