Thank you for your interest in applying to participate in Creative Reaction Lab's Redesigning Education For Racial Equity & Social Healing (REFRESH) program year 2021-2022.

REFRESH is an intergenerational civic engagement program for youth and educators. We are bringing together educators of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous youth to learn our unique youth-centered curriculum, When We Create: Building Leadership, Racial Consciousness, and Grassroots Change™ and adapt it to the needs of their classrooms, so that we can amplify and shift power to young leaders, understand our roles in designing equitable outcomes, and collectively shift education structures to support social healing.

For our next program cycle, we will be selecting up to 25 educators per each cohort to join us in learning Equity-Centered Community Design and implementing their curricular adaptations in the 2021-2022 school year. Educators will have the opportunity to indicate which semester they prefer for implementation (Fall 2021 or Spring 2022).

You can view eligibility guidelines, timeline, and further program information on our website. Please feel welcome to reach out to our team at refresh@creativereactionlab.com with any questions or concerns.

ESSAY
At Creative Reaction Lab, we acknowledge that youth historically have been undervalued architects of change and culture. We believe that if we equip Black, Latinx, and Indigenous youth with:

1. training and tools to build consciousness* around context, history, and power surrounding race and ethnicity in the United States;
2. a community for cultural healing, safety, and collective mobilization; and
3. access to traditional power through institutions, funding, and resources;

then they will have the capacity to design interventions that will dismantle existing racial and health inequities; thus co-creating a society that embraces the humanity, rights, and power of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people.

*deep awareness of one’s own thoughts + of the society in which one lives, allowing for critical analysis of the prevailing narratives one sees + experiences.

*Please select ONE of the three points (training and tools, community, access) that resonates with you and share why it is important. (Limit: 500 words)
