The UH Foundation & UH System Early Childhood Education Programs expresses our gratitude to the Samuel and Mary Castle Foundation. This year's grant offers $120,000+ in scholarships for early childhood education students on 7 University of Hawaiʻi Campuses for 2023-2024, with priority to serve practitioners in the early childhood workforce, birth through age 5 years.

Question Title

This grant honors Dr. Ruby Takanishi, a nationally prominent research and policy expert who was born and raised in Hawai'i. She was a strong supporter of early childhood education in Hawaiʻi and a lifelong friend and advisor to the Castle Foundation. Her passionate advocacy of children and developmentally appropriate education makes the an ideal model for Hawai'i's aspiring early childhood educators.

INSTRUCTIONS AND ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY (please read before applying):

Applications are administered directly through the Castle ECE Scholarship program staff through this application. You will be unable to apply through other UH portals, financial aid offices or programs. Fund awards will be confirmed and then deposited into MyUH accounts on the student's home campus from Fall 2023 to Summer 2024. 

Please review the application first, and have all the information you will need to complete it ready before you start and make sure you "submit" after completing the full application.

Currently enrolled student classified student in any of the 7 University of Hawai‘i System undergraduate programs offering undergraduate and post-baccalaureate certificates; associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degrees; and license pathways for early childhood education generalists. 

Funding is meant to offer partial support to any student full or part-time students who are trying to complete a degree, certificate, license or to obtain other academic credentials in ECE while working in the field with intent that they will remain in the State of Hawai'i to teach in order to decrease the shortage of teachers and are not meant to supplant other sources of financial assistance. Funds shall be used for costs of attendance (e.g. tuition, books, fees, etc.). 

First preference is to students currently employed in early childhood education settings (birth to 5 years), second preference is with students who hope to be employed in early childhood education settings.
BASIC CRITERIA

Major: Early Childhood Education (Early Childhood Education, PK-3, or PK-3/K-6)

Enrollment Status: Full-time or Part-time 

Campus: Hawaii CC, Honolulu CC, Kauai CC, Maui College, UH West Oahu, UH Hilo, UH Mānoa 

Level: Undergraduate or Graduate

Preference: First preference is to students currently employed in early childhood education settings (birth to 5 years); second preference is to students who hope to be employed in early childhood education settings.

Need Based: Yes

Gender: All

Min GPA: N/A for Community Colleges & Baccalaureate Students. 3.0 for graduate programs.

Standing: All 

Residency: Everyone, but must intend to stay and teach in Hawaii's early childhood programs.

Additional requirements: The prospective recipient should have some degree of financial need, not determined by federal guidelines.
