We ask for the annual salary to be listed. If you are paying per diem to the Highway Commissioner or Trustees we ask that you multiply that number by 12 and provide an annual (12 month) dollar amount. A per diem is defined as a per meeting or per month fee for services provided as an elected official.

Remember that the Supervisor as the statutorily designated treasurer of the road district may have additional payment of no more than $1,000 added to their salary as an Township Supervisor.

Trustees may be paid a meeting per diem or a monthly amount. If it is a monthly amount, then that can be multiplied by 12 to calculate an annual amount. If they are paid per meeting (defined as a fee set for each time they are asked to meet) then we ask that you provide an average based upon the past 12-month period.

Remember that benefits are included as part of an elected official’s salary. We ask a few questions about health insurance and who in the township (elected officials) is provided health insurance. Additionally, there is a question about retirement. Do you provide retirement benefits (IMRF or an alternative plan) to your elected officials.

Please note that this survey is specific to the ELECTED OFFICIALS in your township. We ask for the number of employees in your township or road district only to track the number of additional (non-elected employees in townships across the state.

If you have any questions regarding completion of this survey, please contact the TOI office.
