Wasting food is a major problem for our finances, our planet and our communities. The average American family wastes 25% of the food they buy--300 pounds per year, per adult. Yet, most of us don't realize how much we waste. As a nation, 40% of the food we produce doesn't get eaten.

This amounts to $130-$230 a month or $1600-$2300 a year for the average family of four. As a nation, we waste $165 billion on food we don't eat. It costs an additional 1.3 billion dollars to send it all to the landfill.
