CEC’s Professional Preparation Standards define the expertise special educators must master for the safe and effective practice of our profession. These standards are used to inform preparation programs, accreditation organizations, and licensing agencies.

CEC partners with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), a national educator preparation program accreditor, to recognize education programs that prepare teachers to work with students with exceptionalities, based on their meeting of standards established by CEC. Every seven years, CAEP requires that Specialized Professional Associations (SPAs) like CEC, review their professional standards and make revisions, as necessary, and with input from the field they represent. CAEP has approved a standards application submission deadline for CEC of July 2020.

To learn more about the current Standards Development Process, you can watch this webinar hosted by the co-chairs of CEC's Standards Development Workgroup.

This survey will ask for your feedback on the current Draft CEC Initial Standards (as of June 1, 2018). Each Draft Standard includes the title of the Standard, a description of the Standard, and the components that make up the standard (the numbered list). You can view the complete Draft Standards and Components here.

In developing this draft, the Standards Development Workgroup focused on performance-based behaviors we want to see from beginning special educators and worked within CEC and CAEP parameters to develop a concise, yet complete, document.

Please provide your feedback on this Draft of the CEC Initial Standards by Monday, July 9.  As feedback is received, the Workgroup will make revisions. As drafts become more complete, supporting documents will be completed and additional feedback will be sought.
