What is the study about? The aim of this project is to look at psychological factors which may be important in the development of social withdrawal for young adults. The particular psychological factors being investigated are relationship styles and ways of managing emotions.

Who can participate? Anyone aged between 16 and 35 can participate in this study.

What will I have to do? If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a number of questions about yourself lasting approximately 35 minutes. All of the questions are in English so it is important that you have a sufficient level of English language to be able to read and understand the survey.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential? Your answers are recorded purely for research purposes and will be held confidentially. Individual responses will be anonymised. Should the research lead to publications in scientific journals, your identification will not be included in any publication.

Do I have to take part? No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you decide to take part you will be asked to give your consent on the following page. You can click on "exit this survey" at any time, without giving a reason, and no further contact will be made. If you leave the survey your answers from previous pages will be saved.

What will I get out of taking part? Once the survey is complete you will be given the opportunity to enter a prize draw with chances to win one of: two iPad 2's, one £30 iTunes voucher. To enter the competition you must complete the survey, provide a valid email address and give consent be re­contacted on this address.

What happens to my data/personal information? Information obtained from all questionnaires that you complete will be anonymised and stored on University of Edinburgh file servers for a period of 10 years. The only people who will have access to your data are the principal researchers.

Are there any disadvantages to taking part? It is possible that the questionnaires may cover topics that are sensitive or difficult for you to think about. If you feel any distress you can stop the questionnaire at any stage.You may find the following websites helpful if you feel distressed about any of the issues covered:

Has the study been ethically approved? The study has been reviewed and approved by The University of Edinburgh School of Health in Social Science Ethics Committee.
