2017 Travel Ban Survey |
On Friday, January 27, 2017, the White House issued an Executive Order on Visas and Immigration that bans citizens from seven majority Muslim countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen) from being able to enter or return to the United States. MPSA has issued a statement in opposition to this ban and is working with a coalition of Learned Societies and Universities to convince the President to rescind the order.
We realize that this Executive Order will prevent any presenters for the upcoming MPSA Conference from being able to physically attend the conference if they are citizens in one of those seven countries. In order to allow some conference participation from these researchers, MPSA will still allow conference presenters who are citizens of those seven countries to present their research during the conference – using a web connection so the person does not need to physically travel to the United States. These presentations will take place in a series of featured panels we are calling “Silenced Research” and will be part of a broader set of sessions that will include roundtables examining some of the fundamental challenges presented by this type of policy.
Since we have never asked about the citizenship of attendees, we do not know exactly who is impacted by this policy. If you will take a minute to complete this brief set of questions we will work with you to arrange alternate ways for you to present. If you have already registered for the conference, we will also refund your registration fees. There will be no fee to present your research remotely.
