Teacher Education & Training

We’re interested in what you think about teacher training. How we train our educators, and what focus we think is important for them to have, is determined by both research and public policy (regulation and facilitation).

Teacher education and training is a hugely complex system. Do you think our teachers come out of their own tertiary education knowing enough pedagogy? Do they speak te reo fluently? Should they? Do they know how to teach cross-disciplinary units? Should we be teaching them how to team-teach these days? Are they able to inspire students from vastly different backgrounds, and with different educational needs? Is teacher training a long enough course? Should we add some more subjects or speciality areas? What about the background – what life experience and knowledge should a person have before they’re able to train as a teacher? Should we be preparing teachers to work in low resource environments? Should all new teachers have to train in a low decile school first?

We want to know what you think would work. We want to know what would best serve your community, and we want you to tell us so that we can advocate for it on your behalf
