The Jockey Club Scholarship Program was developed to assist students in academic pursuit of majors for future employment in the equine industry.  Although the scholarship is open to students in any equine breed or discipline, preference will be given to candidates with the academic credentials, work experience and expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.

Sponsored by The Jockey Club; the breed registry for North American Thoroughbreds which is dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing, this scholarship will be awarded annually in the amount of $15,000 to one recipient.  Continuing academic excellence each semester is a condition to receive the full scholarship award. The Jockey Club encourages any current or prospective student with an interest in pursuing a career in the equine industry to apply. Candidates must be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in the equine or applicable field of study that could be applied in the equine industry with preference given to candidates expressing a strong interest in a career in the Thoroughbred industry.  Scholarships are for one academic school year and recipients must reapply every year. For spring semester renewal, students must maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point and full-time status.

To be eligible for the scholarship a student must:
  • Be enrolled or pending enrollment pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree at any college with a preference to those in equine-related academic programs
  • Interest in pursuing a career in the equine industry
  • Preference to those expressing a strong interest in the Thoroughbred industry
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the previous semester (or cumulative high school GPA equivalent)
Application process and deadlines
Candidates must submit all requirements below by March 31 for their application to be considered for the following school year. Online submission is preferred; all mailed documents must be postmarked by March 31.

  3. Minimum of three letters of recommendations from persons not related to you (at least one should be from a professor or employer)
  4. Complete at least one of the following essays:
    • 500 words or less - Describe your current involvement in the equine and/or Thoroughbred industry as well as your proposed career path.
    • 500 words or less – How will your current field of study contribute to your career in the equine and/or Thoroughbred industry?
    • 500 words or less – What are the most important issues facing the equine and/or Thoroughbred industry?
  5. Interview – finalist will be notified on or before April 30 for scheduling of an interview (via phone)
