Informed Consent: Bridging the Opportunity Gap - Underrepresented Populations

Over the last few decades there has been a decline in the number and quality of skilled workers entering the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. The study you are being asked to participate in, is designed to identify positive factors and negative barriers that individuals experience in pursuing a career in STEM. This study is being conducted by doctoral students, Francisco Alonso and Paul Woo, under the supervision of Dr. Eugene Kim, Dissertation Chair, Concordia University Irvine, School of Education. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board, Concordia University Irvine, in Irvine, CA.

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study is to identify the positive factors and negative barriers that individuals have experienced in attaining their STEM career.

PARTICIPATION: Participation in this survey is completely voluntary. You have the right to refuse, withdraw, or discontinue participation at any time without any type of penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

CONFIDENTIALITY: Your responses to this survey will be recorded by an on-line survey, and your personal or identifiable information will be kept strictly confidential. Confidentiality will be provided, so your responses or your participation will never be associated or connected to you. This survey will be conducted with the highest level of professionalism and ethics, there will be no dissemination of the data. After the study is completed the data will be safely stored in a password protected, secured and safe environment for a period of 5 years.

DURATION: The participant should expect to spend between 15 to 45 minutes completing the survey.

RISKS: There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to you associated with this survey, however some of the questions may bring up some memories that could be associated with negative experiences or unpleasant episodes in your life. The risk of confidentiality breach is always there, however the data is encrypted using secure TLS protocols and SurveyMonkey's systems are housed in secure SOC 2 accredited data centers that are monitored 24/7 with a dedicated Trust & Security organization.

BENEFITS: There are no monetary or tangible benefits associated with the participation in this research, however your participation will be a potential direct contributor to bringing diversity and equity to the STEM workforce.

VIDEO/AUDIO/PHOTOGRAPH: Only those who voluntarily participate in the one to one interviews will be recorded. These videos will be safely stored in a password protected, secured and safe environment for a period of 5 years.
