Dear Colleague,

Imaging is the most efficient diagnostic tool to monitor implant performance and detect early signs of failure in the area of joint replacement. Since imaging abnormalities often precede the appearance of clinical signs and symptoms and always precede revision surgery - up to many years – they are an appropriate surrogate marker of failure. Better use of the information of existing imaging series (especially serial radiographs) and inclusion of systematic early imaging combined with clinical symptoms in post-marketing surveillance protocols of new implants has the potential to improve and speed up the detection of inferior implants. Moreover, artificial intelligence based tools may facilitate some of the steps in imaging analysis.
