NPs, Midwives, and LPNs

Changes have been announced to three health professions in Alberta: nurse practitioners (NPs), midwives, and licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Details below explain what’s happening and how health-care delivery will be impacted.

In this survey, we would like your thoughts on these health professions. We will share the survey results with our partners in health care.

This survey should take less than three minutes to complete.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs)

Thirty (30) new NPs will be hired to work in rural and underserved communities, including the Bonnyville Primary Care Network (PCN), the Aspen PCN in northern Alberta, and Bow Valley PCN. NPs will also work in two urban settings—an opioid dependency clinic in Sherwood Park and the Covenant Health Foster Care Clinic in Edmonton.

More NPs working in primary care settings will give Albertans in underserved areas greater access to a health-care provider.

Midwives

Midwives’ scope of practice was expanded in 2019, allowing them to:

- Prescribe and administer vaccines
- Perform ultrasounds and insert IUDs
- Prescribe, order, and administer a broader range of medications and prescription drugs

The expanded scope of practice supports maternal care by helping more women in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities access midwifery services.

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)

As of February 1, 2020, LPNs have been able to do more in five key areas, including:

- Administer blood and dispense certain drugs
- Provide ultrasound for bedside assessments
- Give intravenous nutrition and medication by invasive procedures

With a broader scope of practice, LPNs will be able to provide more patient care and support the workload of other health providers.
