Writing is often compared to making a long journey. You need to keep your momentum up in order to make it to the end – one foot in front of the other, right, then left, then… 

Right Left Write is run in conjunction with our weekly newsletter, Pen & Pixel. Each month we’ll announce a new genre prompt, then it’s over to you to create a short story of up to 500 words and right, left, write. 
 
Winning entries are published in the newsletter (the second edition of each month), on our website, and in an annual print anthology edition.

Members can enter for free and non-members can enter for a $5 fee.

  • Check the latest issue of Pen & Pixel for the current genre prompt.
  • Maximum 500 words of prose or 25 lines for poetry (word counts may change for special competitions - check the latest Pen & Pixel for details). Entries that exceed the word limit will be ineligible.
  • One entry per person per month.
  • Your name must not appear anywhere in your submission (this includes the file name).
  • Electronic submissions through this form only. No correspondence or feedback will be given, and only winners will be notified outside of Pen & Pixel.
  • Right Left Write winners are announced every month in our Pen & Pixel email newsletter. Entrants not subscribed already will be automatically signed up to receive Pen & Pixel on submission. You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • Entry is free for all Queensland Writers Centre members. $5 entry fee per submission for non-members.
