Definitions:

Smart Meters:  Electric meters that allow two-way communication between the utility and the customer and allow for advanced technology programs such as; identify and isolate outages, energy use monitoring and alerts, time-based rate programs, incentives to reduce peak demand, allow customers to actively manage energy usage.

Time of Use Rates:  Adjusts the rate you pay for electricity over the course of the day and allows customers to save money on their bill by shifting their usage to off-peak times of the day such as nights and early morning.  However, rates during peak times, such as afternoons and evenings are typically higher.

Real-time pricing:  Adjust the rate you pay to track the wholesale price of electricity and allows customers to save money by actively managing their usage by monitor electricity pricing.  However, pricing can be volatile, especially during peak load times and system emergencies.

Demand Response Programs:  Allow the utility to reduce the amount of energy used by a customer when prices are high or during times of high demand on the electric grid to reduce a customer’s bill.
