How do I know if I am eligible for the any of the EMS programs?
For EMT click the link to review EMT program requirements. For Paramedic click the link to review Paramedic program requirements. You are eligible to apply to the program once you have completed the steps on this website.

How intensive are the EMT and Paramedic programs?

Both programs are rigorous and designed to meet state and national certification requirements. EMT schedules range from accelerated to extended evening formats, while Paramedic schedules involve full-day instruction and clinical commitments. Students should expect a significant time commitment.

Can I work while enrolled in the program?
Some schedule options are designed to support working students, including evening EMT schedules and an extended Paramedic format aligned with 24/48 fire department shifts. However, due to the intensity of the coursework, managing additional classes or work obligations outside of the program may be challenging.

Do I need to be sponsored to enroll?
No. While certain schedules are designed with sponsored cohorts and workforce partners in mind, ALL EMT and Paramedic options are open to civilian students as well. Sponsorship may provide additional scheduling flexibility, particularly at the Paramedic level.

What is the difference between the 9-month and 11-month Paramedic schedules?
The 9-month option is a full-time, immersive schedule designed for students who can commit to full-day instruction. The 11-month option extends the timeline to better accommodate working adults, particularly fire department sponsored students on a 24/48 fire department shift schedule, while still meeting all certification requirements.

Where are classes held?
All in-person EMT and Paramedic classes are held at the McKinney Campus ONLY, unless participating in dual credit. Clinical experiences will take place at approved partner sites.

Who should I contact for more information?
Prospective students may contact the EMS Department for general program questions. Sponsored students and workforce partners may also coordinate directly with the EMS Department - Program Coordinator to discuss cohort options and scheduling.

Question Title

* WHICH SCHEDULE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Choosing the right EMS schedule depends on your availability, work commitments, and long-term career goals. Use the guide below to help determine which option best fits your situation.

Accelerated or ZTH EMT Schedule (Approximately 3 Months)

Best for you if:
  • You are sponsored by a fire department or workforce partner
  • You can commit to a fast-paced, full-time schedule
  • You want to complete EMT certification as quickly as possible and continue into Fire Academy or Paramedic training

Important to know:
This is the most intensive EMT option and requires full face-to-face participation. Outside work or coursework may be difficult to manage.

Evening EMT Schedule (Working, Non-Sponsored Students)

Best for you if:
  • You need to work during the day and attend classes in the evening
  • You are not sponsored and require a more flexible timeline
  • You can commit to a longer schedule to meet certification requirements
Important to know:
Classes typically begin around 5:30 PM. While this option supports employment, the program remains rigorous and time management is essential.

Dual Credit EMT Schedule (High School Students Only)

Best for you if:
  • You are a student at a partnered high school
  • You are eligible for dual credit enrollment
  • You want to begin EMT training while completing high school
Important to know:
This schedule aligns with the high school academic calendar and is available only through approved dual credit partnerships.

Still Not Sure?
If you’re unsure which schedule fits your goals or availability, the EMS Department can help you evaluate your options.

Contact the EMS Department for personalized guidance, or if you are a sponsored or dual credit student, you may also consult your employer, workforce partner, or high school dual credit office.
Accelerated Paramedic Schedule (Approximately 9 Months)

Best for you if:
  • You can commit to full-day, full-time instruction
  • You want to complete Paramedic training in the shortest standard timeframe
  • You are able to limit outside work or coursework during the program
Important to know:
This schedule is highly intensive and may be difficult to balance with employment unless you are sponsored.

Shift-based Paramedic Schedule (Approximately 11 Months | 24/48 Shift-Friendly)

Best for you if:
  • You are a working adult, especially within the fire service
  • You work a 24/48 shift schedule
  • You need additional flexibility to maintain employment
Important to know:
While this schedule offers more flexibility for working students, it remains a full-time, demanding program and is not well suited for taking additional coursework.
