Employment Type: Permanent Full-time (32-40 hrs/week)
Wage: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Route Setter and Climbing Team Instructor is responsible for setting high-quality and challenging routes, as well as developing and implementing training programs that cater to competitive climbers of all skill levels. This position requires a deep understanding of climbing movements, route grading, injury prevention, and training techniques. They will also mentor and train junior route setters and instructors as required.

Key Responsibilities: 

● Set high-quality routes for all climbing areas in the gym 
● Develop and implement training activities for competitive climbers of all skill levels
● Analyzing form, agility, strength, flexibility, and existing techniques 
● Ensure that routes are graded accurately and challenging enough to meet the needs of the gym’s members, Youth Recreational Programs, and the Competitive Climbing Team 
● Conduct regular assessments to track teams’ progress and adjust training plans accordingly 
● Collaborate with the gym management team to maintain the climbing and training area’s aesthetics, including the selection of holds, equipment, and volumes 
● Regularly assess and maintain climbing and training equipment, including ropes, anchors, weights, resistance bands, and hangboards 
● Ensure that all routes and equipment meet safety standards 
● Mentor and training junior route setters and coaches as needed 
● Keep up-to-date with industry trends, techniques, and equipment 
● Assist with competitions and events are required 
● Provide excellent customer service to all gym members 

Requirements: 

● No degree, certificate or diploma 
● 7-10 years of climbing experience 
● 4-6 years of experience in route setting 
● 5+ years hands-on experience Sports Instructor (preferably with competitive climbers)
● 5+ years of climbing gym work experience 
● Current first aid and CPR certification 
● Comfortable working at heights for short and long periods of time 
● Brilliant coordination, mentorship, and informed risk-based decision making
● Strong communication and leadership skills 
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
● Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

ADDITIONAL:
  • Instructor certification(s) considered an asset
  • IRATA International Level 1 considered an asset
  • Deep understanding of climbing movements, route grading, injury prevention, and training techniques
  • Proven track record of creating innovative and challenging routes, and helping climbers achieve their goals
  • Experience working closely with all ages
