The Teacher Registration and Standards Act 2004 (the Act), legislates how the Board oversees and promotes registration and the teaching profession in South Australia.

Since the Act began operation in 2005, teacher registration within Australia has undergone various changes at both state and national level. In response to this, we seek your feedback about the current Act and potential changes which will be used to inform the development of potential amendments to the Act to further enhance the scheme of teacher registration in South Australia.

The Board regulates the teaching profession by:
 - ensuring the suitability of applicants for registration
 - establishing and maintaining professional teaching standards
 - accrediting South Australian initial teacher education courses
 - investigating complaints of unprofessional conduct, incapacity and competence.

In promoting the four levels of teacher standards - Graduate, Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead the Board does not certify Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers.

The Teachers Registration Board is currently made up of 16 members who are nominated by the following groups:  

· Department for Education (schools & early childhood)
· Australian Education Union
· Association of Independent Schools 
· Catholic Education Office 
· Independent Education Union 
· Initial Teacher education providers.

The Presiding Member, a legal practitioner and a parent representative are nominated by the Minister for Education.

The nominated people are then appointed by the Governor of South Australia.

Currently, the Act requires that at least half the members of the Board are teachers, one member is a parent of a school student representing the community and one is a lawyer.
