Project Location & Overview

Project Location & Overview
The 8th Road N and N Lexington Street Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Project is located in the Bluemont neighborhood. The advanced concept design provides a safe, accessible route to connect students and residents from portions of the Bluemont neighborhood south of Wilson Boulevard to Ashlawn Elementary School and the nearby park amenities.

Project Background
This project was originally identified as a needed improvement during the 2015 renovation of Ashlawn Elementary School. Presently, there is no American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible path through this part of neighborhood. The advanced concept design adds sidewalk to 8th Rd N and N Lexington Street and upgrades curb ramps. The project remains a priority connection due to the lack of an accessible pathway, the 20% of students who walk or bike to Ashlawn Elementary School, and the expanded walk zone for the 2020/2021 school year.

Next Steps
Concept designs were shared with nearby residents, the Bluemont Civic Association and Ashlawn Elementary School in the fall of 2018 and 2019. Feedback was collected during these meetings and used to help inform an advanced concept, prioritizing feasibility, safety and available funding.

After reviewing the background information and the Advanced Concept design on the following pages, Arlington County is seeking feedback on the project. Thank you for your interest, time and feedback.
