Microsoft announced a significant update: “Basic Authentication retirement for legacy protocols in Exchange Online”

Starting October 13, 2020, Microsoft will no longer support basic authentication for several protocols to access Exchange Online including the IMAP/POP3 protocols used by Pega's email listener. (See Microsoft announcement here)

Please note that this change does not impact:
·      SMTP authentication
·      Exchange server on-premises products

What is the impact to Pega applications?

With this change, Pega applications using Office365 will not be able to authenticate to Office 365 Exchange Online accounts once support is discontinued. Pega is proactively working to add supported protocols to our email listener.

Pega will be adding OAuth2.0 support in email listener

To allow our customers using Office365 email to adjust to this above-mentioned change, Pega will be adding support for OAuth2.0 authentication in email listener. Applications will need to be updated to leverage the new authentication option.

Please note that customers who are using email providers other than Office365, such as exchange on-premise or GMail, will not be affected and can continue to use their current email integrations.

Next Steps

To help us provide the best solution and support for this change, we ask that you fill in this short survey and provide with a few details on your application's usage of email listener.

We are currently working on the plan to add OAuth2 support to Pega email listener infrastructure, and will share the details as soon as those are finalized. Please reach out to EmailListenerOAuth2Support@pega.com for any questions or comments in the meantime.
