Cultural Bridges
The Cultural Bridges Program serves as a bridge of communication between the Issaquah School District and parents who were not born in America. Cultural Bridges helps families overcome language and cultural barriers and empowers them to become a part of our community while helping their kids be successful in school through three strategies:

1) Producing the Cultural Bridges magazine, a bilingual printed and online publication in 6 languages: English, Spanish,  Mandarin, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese every three months (4 per school calendar year). This Magazine engages immigrant and communities of color specifically. It is the only magazine of its kind that specifically addresses local education, health, and how to navigate systems and processes within the Issaquah School District and cities of Issaquah, Sammamish, and Renton for non-native families.

2) Providing outreach and serving as mentors to cultural groups to develop support and connection systems.

3) Coordinating events and offering translation services for Issaquah School District schools during New Student Enrollment, Curriculum Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, Hearing and Vision Screening and other critical student and parent engagement events.

Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the school year.  To get involved, please contact Marisol Visser.

VOICE Mentor
VOICE (Volunteers of Issaquah Changing Education) is an in-school mentor program that matches community volunteers with students identified by teachers and counselors as needing extra support. The mentors and the students meet for one hour per week under the direction of the teacher at the school. These volunteer mentors are carefully matched with the students based upon mentors’ academic and grade level interest, time of day availability and choice of school. The mentors go through a training, orientation and also have the opportunity to meet with the teacher before the mentoring initially begins. Each school has a Site Coordinator for the VOICE Program. The Site Coordinator and the VOICE Director work collaboratively to make the best match for student and mentor. VOICE Mentors are valued for their time and commitment to our students. One hour a week can make a difference in the life and academics of a student. For more information, please contact  VOICE@isfdn.org
