The Township of Rideau Lakes is seeking your opinion on our Swimming Pool By-Law.

The Ontario Building Code does not regulate private outdoor swimming pools, nor the enclosure around such pools. Under the Municipal Act municipalities have the ability to enact a by-law requiring fencing around a private swimming pool. The intent of such a by-law is public safety; to protect individuals (generally children) from drowning. The Township currently has a Swimming Pool By-Law, which was created in 2004. This By-law is in need of significant revisions and updates to ensure the intent of the by-law is achieved. The proposed by-law was created to clarify what is considered a swimming pool (ie. not a kiddie pool or a landscaping feature) and to promote compliance. No new regulation is being proposed.

Do you think the Township should have a by-law to require enclosures around swimming pools?

*Without a by-law there would be no oversight of pool access safety. Any safety measures would be at the discretion of the owner.
