Welcome to the 2018 Nonprofit Capacity Survey. Your participation will help the nonprofit community in the five-county, Southwest Florida region in many ways. The survey is a self-assessment instrument that helps nonprofits identify capacity* strengths and challenges and establish capacity-building goals. It is primarily a diagnostic and learning tool that provides a useful framework for measuring growth in capacity over time. The continuous measurement of nonprofit capacity will support the development of core skills, management practices, and systems within the individual nonprofit resulting in a stronger Southwest Florida community.

* Capacity is defined as the ability of nonprofit organizations to fulfill their missions in an effective manner (Urban Institute).

We hope that this survey will serve as a catalyst for your organization's key stakeholders to discuss the capacity of your organization. Please note this survey is anonymous. However, you will be asked to provide the name of the organization with which you are affiliated and your general role within that organization (senior management, board member or staff).

What is being measured?

You will be rating your organization on a variety of capacity elements, which have been grouped into four areas of organizational capacity: Leadership Capacity, Adaptive Capacity, Management Capacity and Technical Capacity. Each question will ask you to rate your organization’s capacity on a scale of 1-5 (1=Least like us; 5=Most like us or N/A). Please enter the number that best represents the current state of your organization.

This is not a test.

Please remember this is not a test. There are no right or wrong answers. We do not expect organizations to rank consistently in the 4 and 5 range for all questions. With that in mind, please answer the following questions as honestly as you can. Select N/A (Not Applicable/Do not know) if the question either does not apply to your organization, or you are unable to provide an answer given your experience. Throughout the survey, you will have the opportunity to provide comments regarding your selections. We encourage you to do so. It will help us understand your organization’s capacity needs. The survey should last from 10 to 15 minutes.

Your answers will be held in confidence.

The information you supply will only be viewed and/or used by staff for the purpose of enhancing your organization's capacity. Your answers will neither be associated with nor have any influence on any current or future annual grant requests with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation. None of the specific information you provide will be shared with any community stakeholders inside or outside your agency. However, general collective trends may be shared to inform regional capacity building dialogues within the region.
