Study Information

The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) in partnership with the U.S. Composting Council (USCC) and the Desert Research Institute (DRI) is conducting research on composting facilities across the nation. The survey should only take about 25 minutes of your time. Participation is voluntary and you may discontinue participation at any time.

Incentives
As a thank you for your participation, everyone who fully completes the survey will receive:
  • Access to real-time visualizations of interim results.
  • An advanced copy of the final report.
  • Option to enter a drawing to win a $100, $50, or $25 Amazon gift card at the completion of the survey. Three winners will be selected.
Background
As composting programs become more widespread, it is important to have accurate information on organic material recovery, processing capacity, and technology and infrastructure. As state and federal agencies do not have a common approach for reporting this survey will provide the industry with important information about the state of composting in the U.S.

The survey includes questions on the total amount of organic waste composted at your facility for calendar years 2019 (normal operations pre-COVID) and 2016. We encourage you to take a moment before you begin to collect information on the amount of organics processed in 2016 and 2019 at your facility and total amount of compost you produced in 2019. This will help understand how the industry has changed over time. Privacy and confidentiality are important to us. All data will be presented in compiled form. Specific facility sizes, addresses and contact information will not be shared.
